America's Musical Landscape Details

About the Author After receiving her MA in Music History and Literature at Arizona State University, Jean Ferris taught Music History and Appreciation at ASU. In addition to her work at the University, she has been involved with the music community by serving as a church choir director, singing with the Phoenix Symphony Chorale, playing the organ, and touring to Japan with her high school handbell choir--apparently the first handbell choir to perform in that country. Ferris is the author of two books: Music: The Art of Listening and America's Musical Landscape. Read more

I had never heard of American Roots Music. Then, I had a chance to take an American Roots Music course at university. It was fascinating. This is the textbook. I bought the older edition ( here) and it still did the trick. Mastering the subject is more important than getting the latest edition. Take it from an old guy who has taken classes at a dozen or so universities. There is a great audio companion that you can use to any of the editions of America's Musical Landscape. Use it in a CD player in a car that still has one; then, watch the Youtube on any of the music that you hear and you will get a good feel for what American Roots Music and classes are about. The chapters will make much more sense too.
